A wheelchair is a chair that is designed with wheels for those people who can’t walk due to illness, injury or disability. It can be a replacement for walking and comes in variations such as electric or manually. The concept of wheel chairs was originated from china where Chinese people invented wheelbarrow to move people as well as heavy objects. The first wheel chair was invented by two friends Harry Jennings and Herbert Everest in 1933 which is used by Mr. Everest who had broken his back in an accident. Some common types of wheelchairs are:
Manual WheelchairManual wheelchairs are those who require human power to move. Some manual wheelchair can be folded for placement into a vehicle. These wheelchairs are propelled by the occupant by turning large back wheels. Persons moves the chair by pushing on the hand rims which are made of circular tubing.
Electric WheelchairElectric wheelchair is a special type of wheelchairs that moved with electric motor and navigational controls. In these wheelchairs a small joystick mounted on the armrest rather than manual power. It also consists of head-switches, chin-operated joysticks and other specialist controls to perform independent operation for those people who cannot manage a manual joystick.
Folding WheelchairThese wheelchairs are lightweight construction and have the ability to fold. The chair parts such as back and arm rests are also foldable and fold when needed. Folding wheelchair has often variations on basic design but can be highly customized for the users need.
Commode WheelchairCommode wheelchairs are used by those persons who can’t walk due to disability and they used these wheelchairs as for bathroom commode. These chairs are consists of a seat, foot rests, four wheels: two caster wheels at the front and two large wheels at the back, a toilet seat and lid, a pair of arms for support, a bucket for waste and a splash guard. These wheelchairs are usually made from steel materials.
Sports WheelchairIn modern day’s lot of sports have been adapted to be played by people with various disabilities. For participating in different sports athletes use special type of wheelchairs which also called sports wheelchair. All sports wheelchairs are designed according to that game and such common sports in which these wheelchairs used are basketball, tennis, and racing sports.
Wheelchair LiftWheelchair lifts access aids that allow persons to overcome stairs, and access vehicles. Patient lifts are more transfer aids that help people get into, or out of, baths, beds or wheelchairs. Wheelchair lift usually lifted both the wheelchair user & the wheelchair.
Wheelchair RampIt is an inclined plane installed in addition instead of chairs for people pushing wheelchairs to more easily access a building. It can be permanent or portable. These are made from aluminum concrete or wood. Some common types of wheelchair ramp are threshold ramps, suitcase ramps, multi-fold ramps, solid ramps, and vehicle ramps.
Wheelchair PartsWheelchairs are consists of a seat, foot rests and four wheels; two caster wheels at the front and two large wheels at the back. Two rear wheels in the back usually have hand rims. Many optional accessories are also available foe wheelchairs like anti-tip bars, safety belts, adjustable backrests and so many.
